Welcome to the FluentSpeak FAQ! Here you'll find answers to common questions about using the app. If you don't find your answer here, try searching the help site or check our detailed Guides.

Getting Started & Content

I'm new, where should I begin?

Welcome! We recommend starting with our Getting Started Guide. It covers the basics of browsing content, adding words, and key features. You can also explore the Browse section to see the different types of learning materials available.

What's the difference between Lessons, Articles, Word Lists, Sentence Lists, and Language Points?

  • Lessons: Structured, comprehensive units covering vocabulary, grammar, reading, dialogues, and tests (like textbook chapters).
  • Articles: Longer reading passages on various topics for contextual practice.
  • Word Lists: Focused sets of vocabulary around a specific theme.
  • Sentence Lists: Collections of example sentences for a specific theme or grammar point.
  • Language Points: Detailed explanations of specific grammar rules or structures with examples.

How do I find specific content?

Use the Browse section, typically found in the main navigation menu. You can filter by content type (Lessons, Articles, etc.) and often sort by criteria like date or HSK level.

Vocabulary & Studying

How do I add a word to my personal study list ("My Words")?

Use the dictionary search (in the top bar or dashboard) to find the word. Then, click the Bookmark icon (bookmark-plus-outline) next to its definition. See the Managing Your Word List Guide for details.

How do I remove a word from "My Words"?

You can either go to your "My Words" page and click the remove icon next to the word, OR search for the word again and click the now-active bookmark icon to deselect it. Details are in the Managing Your Word List Guide.

How do Flashcards work? Am I penalized for wrong answers?

Flashcards are a stress-free practice tool. Start a session from "My Words" or a Word List. View the word, try to recall the meaning/Pinyin, flip the card to check, and mark if you knew it (Yes/No). There's no penalty for incorrect answers – it's purely for review and reinforcement.

What is the "Word Review Activity"?

This activity takes you sequentially through words in a Word List, showing details like characters, Pinyin, definitions, and character stroke order/animations. It's a focused study session, different from Flashcards. See the Word Review Activity Guide.

How can I practice handwriting?

You can generate unlimited PDF handwriting practice sheets! Go to the Practice Sheets section, add words, customize options, and create a PDF to print or use on a tablet.

Features & Interface

How do I show or hide Pinyin / English Translations?

Use the toggle buttons on the Interaction Bar, which is usually visible when viewing content like Articles, Sentence Lists, or parts of Lessons.

What does "Interaction Mode" do on the Interaction Bar?

When ON, clicking individual characters often shows their Pinyin/definition and opens a Character Panel. When OFF, clicking text might highlight the whole sentence. It allows for more granular study when enabled. Learn more in the Interaction Bar Guide.

How do Favourites work?

You can mark content (like Articles, Lessons, Word Lists) as a Favourite using the bookmark button on the item's action bar. This adds it to your personal "Favourites" list (accessible from the main menu) for quick access later.

Progress & Account

How can I track my learning progress?

Several places!

  • The Progression Page shows overall stats like streaks, weekly time, badges, and HSK level summaries.
  • The HSK Board lets you focus on specific HSK levels and mark words as "Learned."
  • The Analytics Page provides deeper insights like study time heatmaps and word recall rates.

How is my study time tracked?

Study time for specific content (used in Analytics and weekly goals) is tracked when you explicitly start a study session, by clicking a "Begin" button when viewing an item like an Article or Lesson. See the Browsing Items Guide for where this button usually appears.

Where can I find the Privacy Policy or Terms of Service?

You can usually find links to our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service in the footer of the website/app or linked from the main help page.
