HSK Board
Understanding the HSK Board
The HSK Board provides a dedicated space to explore vocabulary organized by the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, or Chinese Proficiency Test) levels. Think of it as a structured overview of the HSK word lists, integrated directly into the app.
While FluentSpeak emphasizes a balanced approach to language learning that goes beyond strict HSK adherence, many learners still find the HSK framework a valuable guide for structuring their studies and tracking their progress.
(Important Note): Our platform utilizes HSK levels as a significant grouping mechanism, but we also consider other crucial factors like word frequency and practical usage. Our primary goal is to empower you with the broadest possible communicative ability in Chinese, as efficiently as possible. The HSK Board is a tool to help you navigate and leverage the HSK framework within this broader learning philosophy.
The HSK Board is organized into three key sections:
1. HSK Level Selector:
Located at the top of the HSK Board, the Level Selector allows you to easily choose any of the six officially recognized HSK levels (HSK 1 through HSK 6). Simply click on the dropdown menu to select the HSK level you wish to focus on.
2. HSK Level Progress Bar:
Positioned directly beneath the Level Selector, the Progress Bar visually represents your learning progress for the currently selected HSK level.
As you study words within the app and mark them as "Learned" (using the "Mark as Learned" button, available in various contexts), the percentage displayed in this progress bar will increase. This provides an immediate and motivating way to track your cumulative vocabulary acquisition within each HSK level.
Furthermore, your overall HSK progress, as reflected by these individual level progress bars, is also summarized and visualized in the dedicated HSK Progression section of your Progression Page.
While you can mark words as "Learned" from various locations throughout the app, the HSK Board offers a convenient centralized place to specifically focus on and manage your learning within a particular HSK level.
3. HSK Vocabulary List:
Below the Progress Bar, you will find a comprehensive list of all the vocabulary words associated with the HSK level you have selected.
Marking Words as Learned
As you review the vocabulary list and become confident in your knowledge of a word, you can use the "Mark as Learned" button (often represented by a checkmark icon) next to that word.
Upon clicking "Mark as Learned":
- The HSK Level Progress Bar will update, reflecting your increased mastery of the vocabulary within that level.
- A brief confirmation notification will appear, visually confirming that the word has been successfully marked as "Learned."
Enhanced Vocabulary Stats After Flashcard Review
After completing a flashcard review session, the system automatically updates the learning statistics for all words you encountered during that session. In addition to existing metrics, you will then see two new insightful statistics displayed for each word:
- Accuracy: This percentage represents your overall accuracy in identifying the word correctly across all previous flashcard review sessions. It provides a measure of your consistent recognition of the word.
- Recall: This metric indicates the estimated likelihood of you remembering the word currently. It's a dynamic measure that ranges from "Strong" (typically after recent study) to "Weak" (influenced by factors such as time since last review and your overall performance with the word). This recall indicator helps you identify words that might need further review.
