Handwriting Practice Sheets
Want to master writing Chinese characters? The best way is to practice by hand. Our Practice Sheet Generator lets you create unlimited, customized PDF handwriting sheets that you can print out or use on a tablet with a stylus.
This tool gives you full control over the content, allowing you to focus on the exact vocabulary you need to learn.
Writing characters by hand creates a strong tactile connection in your brain, helping to solidify muscle memory and your understanding of character structure. It's one of the most effective ways to truly learn to write. If you're interested, you can read more about the Benefits of Pen and Paper Practice.
How to Find the Practice Sheet Generator
- Open the main Fluentspeak menu using the hamburger icon in the top-left hand corner of the screen.
- From the menu, select the "Practice Sheets" option.
How to Create a Practice Sheet
Creating your own sheet is a simple, three-step process right on the Practice Sheets page.
Step 1: Set Your PDF Options
First, configure the general settings for your document in the PDF Options panel. Using a custom header (like "HSK 2 - Chapter 3") is a great way to keep your printed sheets organized.
Step 2: Add Your Words
Next, use the Word List search bar to find and add the vocabulary you want to practice. If you add a word by mistake, simply click the remove icon on the right side of its row to delete it.
Many Chinese words have multiple meanings. To keep your practice focused and save space on your PDF, we highly recommend selecting a single definition.
After adding a word, just click on the definition you want to include. It will highlight in purple , and only that specific meaning will appear on your generated sheet. This ensures you're only studying the definition you need right now.
For detailed help on how to use the powerful word search tool, please see our Using the Word Searcher Guide.
Step 3: Generate Your PDF
Once you've set your options and added your words, just click the Create PDF button at the bottom of the page. Your personalized practice sheet will be created and downloaded automatically.
Understanding Your Practice Sheet
Your generated PDF is designed to give you everything you need for effective practice on one page.
Here’s a breakdown of what each part does:
- A. Header & Pinyin/Definition: At the top of each word's section, you'll see your custom header (if you added one), along with the word's Pinyin and the definitions you selected.
- B. Stroke Order Guide: This sequence of small boxes shows you the correct stroke order for each character. Use it as a quick reference if you get stuck.
- C. Tracing Boxes: The first few boxes have the character rendered faintly. Trace over these to get a feel for the proportions and flow of the character.
- D. Practice Grids: The empty grid boxes are where you practice writing the character on your own, applying what you learned from the tracing and stroke order guides.
